YAKIMA, Wash. - Pinch-hitter Travis Sherman singled in the bottom of the eighth inning and scored the winning run as Billings (Mont.) rallied for a 4-3 victory over Dimond of Anchorage (Alaska) in Thursday's opening round of the Senior Legion Northwest Regional baseball tournament.

Billings (57-12) scored two runs in the eighth off Anchorage reliever Danny Brunnell. Both of the runs were earned, although Anchorage committed three errors in the inning.

For Anchorage (30-13), ace pitcher Brian Montalbo threw seven innings, allowing four hits and striking out eight. In June, Montalbo became the highest Alaska player ever picked in the Major League Baseball Draft when the Atlanta Braves chose him in the fourth round. Montalbo also has a scholarship offer to pitch for California-Berkeley, and has yet to make a decision if he'll go pro or attend school.
