Colin Flynn's penalty kick in the second half gave the Juneau Hawks a 2-1 victory over the Cook Inlet Samurai Thursday in the first round of action from the 2000 Snickers-Alaska State Soccer Cup in Palmer.
Six teams from Juneau are competing at the State Cup, which began Thursday and runs through this weekend.
In the under-12 boys division, Flynn scored the game's first goal on a deflected pass in the first half, then added the game-clinching penalty kick. Goalies Brian Crowder and Eric Choquette combined to make 14 saves for Juneau.
The Juneau Dragons (under-14 boys) fell to the Northern Lights Soccer Club Dynamos 4-1 and lost 9-0 to the Anchorage Youth Soccer Club Thunderbirds Thursday. Mark Rainery scored on a penalty kick for the Dragons.
The Juneau Fire (under-16 girls) defeated the Cook Inlet Soccer Club Tornados 3-1. Results of the Juneau Quicksilver (under-14 girls) game Thursday were unavailable at press time.
The Juneau Orcas (under-13 boys) scored a 9-1 victory against the North Pole Cyclones. Robert Slagle and Jamaal Baily each scored hat tricks to lead the Orcas. Goals were also scored by Kabil Ed, Dylan Ashe and Tyler Dinnan.
Baily and Slagle also scored in the Orcas' 3-2 defeat of the Anchorage Arctic Knights. David Wrightson added a score on a corner kick from Jeff Carpenter and assist by Wesley Dinnan.
