Peacock second at Sitka's Alpine Run

Dewey Peacock of Juneau, now attending Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont., finished second at the Alpine Adventure Run on July 24 in Sitka.

Peacock finished the 7.2-mile climb up Gavan Hill in 1 hour, 14 minutes, 23 seconds. Warren Hancock of Anchorage won the race in 1:12:14.

The race was plagued with rain and fog, which created slick conditions on planking and rocks. Organizers told the Daily Sitka Sentinel that the conditions were the worst in the 11-year history of the event, with visibility reduced to less than 50 feet on the ridgeline.

Fifty-five runners completed the race - the maximum allowed by organizers. Other Juneau runners to finish were Sarah Thompson (1:50:52, 39th place), Marian Clough (1:57:46, 46th) and Jamie Bursell (2:05:11, 54th).
