Mackey, Buser sign up to run Yukon Quest

FAIRBANKS - The Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race will feature two Iditarod champions in its lineup next year.

Martin Buser of Big Lake was among the 20 mushers who signed up Saturday for the 2009 race.

So did Lance Mackey of Fairbanks, the reigning champion of both the Quest and the Iditarod the last two years.

Buser has never run the Quest but he has finished in the Top 10 of the Iditarod 16 times and won $704,000 in prize money.

Among the others signing up were Jon Little of Kasilof, who placed fourth at the 2002 Iditarod and fifth in his only Quest in 2005.

Sonny Lindner of Two Rivers, the inaugural 1984 Quest champion, also registered. He has not run the race since 1992.
