FAIRBANKS - The roof leaks so much at the Noel Wien Public Library in Fairbanks that plastic sheets are used to cover some of the bookcases.
Not only that, the building's pipes are corroding, the trees in the lobby are diseased and it needs new wiring and fire alarms.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says library officials hope to get $17 million in state money to fix up the library, which serves about 1,000 people a day. They're putting together a proposal that would be combined with an $11 million request to build a new library in North Pole.
