JUNEAU - Candidate filing for three seats on the Juneau Assembly and two seats on the Juneau School Board opened today.
Assembly members Marc Wheeler and Frankie Pillifant submitted nominating petitions to the city that were certified this morning. Pillifant filed for re-election to the District 1 seat. Wheeler filed for re-election to the areawide seat.
They had said previously they would run.
Psychotherapist and mediator Dixie Hood today announced plans to file for the District 2 seat. The seat is held by incumbent Don Etheridge, who is running for re-election. Juneau School Board member Stan Ridgeway also has said he will file for the District 2 seat.
Juneau Planning Commissioner Merrill Sanford and businessman Chuck Collins also have said they will run for the Assembly, but haven't indicated which seat they will seek.
Assembly candidates file for a seat based on where they live, but residents vote in all of the races.
School Board seats held by Carolyn Spalding and Deana Darnall also are up for election this fall. Spalding and Darnall have told the Juneau Empire they won't run for re-election.
The Assembly and School Board seats have three-year terms.
Filing closes at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22. The election is Oct. 1. Nominating petitions are available from the city clerk's office or online at www.juneau.lib.ak.us/clerk/elections/.
