ANCHORAGE - An 81-year-old man thwarted a robbery in his home Saturday, wounding one of the intruders but also his own finger.

Anchorage police said Roy Lee Hendricks awoke at 1:41 a.m. to find two men standing over him, demanding that he give them his wallet.

Hendricks grabbed a two-shot .22-caliber Derringer pistol. The men attacked Hendricks, police said, and Hendricks fired, striking one of the men in the arm, as well as himself in the finger.

The men ran out of the bedroom and the wounded intruder was held at gunpoint by Hendricks' 57-year-old roommate.

Gabrielle A. Anderson, 19, was charged with burglary, robbery, criminal mischief and two counts of assault. He was treated for a grazing gunshot wound to his arm and taken to the Anchorage jail.

Hendricks received treatment at his home by medics, then drove himself to a hospital.
