JUNEAU - Two people have died in a plane crash near Sitka.

The Coast Guard says it found the wreckage Sunday night after the Federal Aviation Administration reported it was monitoring a plane running low on fuel and experiencing engine problems.

The FAA later lost contact with the plane.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew found the crash site about 20 miles north of Sitka.

A rescue swimmer aboard helicopter was lowered to the wreckage and confirmed that both people were deceased.

The names of the dead have not been released.

Officials say the plane landed in Gustavus earlier Sunday, with the occupants looking for fuel.

There was no fuel available and the two were advised to go to Juneau, but they indicated they would try to make it to Sitka, their intended destination.
