Erin Cottingham notched a hat trick - with two of her three goals coming on assists from her sister Jordan Cottingham - as the Juneau Quicksilver Under-14 girls soccer team beat Northern Lights Soccer Club 4-1 at the 2000 Snickers-Alaska State Soccer Cup in Palmer Saturday.
After falling behind 1-0 on a Northern Lights goal midway in the first half, Juneau exploded with two quick goals to start the second. Jessy Post scored with an assist from Gretchen Dierking in the first minute of play. Cottingham, assisted by Post, quickly followed with a second score to give Juneau the lead. Cottingham and Monica Daugherty each added a goal in the second half.
The Quicksilver also beat a team called Avanti 8-0 on Friday night. Theresa Badilla, Dierking and Jennifer Wharton each scored two goals; Cottingham had a goal and two assists; Post scored once and Lynn Metcalf and Jordan Cottingham each had an assist.
In other Juneau soccer action at state, the Juneau Hawks Under-12 boys lost a 1-0 decision to the Anchorage Goldstrikers Friday. The Hawks came back with a 9-0 victory later in the day, and played Saturday afternoon.
The Juneau Fire (Under-16 girls) fell to the Anchorage Goldstrikers 6-0 Friday, then downed the Anchorage Youth Soccer Club Arsenals 5-1 later in the day.
In boys' games, the Juneau Orcas (Under-13) suffered a 4-1 defeat from the Anchorage Goldstrikers Friday. David Wrightson scored the lone goal for Juneau, with an assist from Jamaal Bailey.
The Juneau Rainmakers (Under-16 boys) were eliminated after a 3-0 loss to the Anchorage Goldstrikers on Friday.
