Hughes wins two region swim titles

Paul Hughes of Juneau's Glacier Swim Club won two events last week in the Region XII Age-Group Long-Course Championship swim meet in Wenatchee, Wash.

Hughes, 13, won the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events in the boys age 13-14 division to lead Glacier Swim Club to a tie for 39th place in the overall standings. Bellevue (Wash.) Swim Club claimed the meet's title with 748 points, while Glacier was the top Alaska swim club. The meet which also featured the Alaska Pacific Swim Team of Anchorage and the Wasilla Waves. The meet was Aug. 3-6.

In the 200 breast, Hughes trailed by 1 1/2 bodylengths with 25 meters left in the race, but he came from behind to win with a time of 2 minutes, 43.33 seconds. Hughes led with 25 meters left in the 100 breast and won going away with a 1:14.20.

Other Glacier Swim Club members to reach the finals at the meet were Aaron Hughes, who took seventh place in 1:25.71 in the boys age 11-12 100 breaststroke and was eighth in the 50 breast (38.99); Kirk Fishel, who was eighth in the boys age 13-14 breast (1:22.35); and Jenna Rutecki, who was eighth in the girls age 9-10 100 backstroke (1:31.09).

Other GSC performances included an 11th place in the boys age 15-18 1,500 freestyle by Jake Kreuzenstein (18:52.48); while Martha Kaiser was 17th in the girls age 15-18 50 free (30.10), 28th in the 100 back (1:20.47) and 31st in the 100 free (1:08.09).

Several other Glacier Swim Club members were in Wenatchee for another meet, the McDonald's Invitational, on Aug. 4-6. GSC placed sixth overall with 126.5 points, the top performance by an Alaska team. Host Barracudas Swim Club won with 405 points.

Jake Kreuzenstein led GSC by breaking the meet record in the boys age 15-19 400-yard individual medley, posting a time of 4:39.57 to break the 1994 record of 5:07.35 by Gabe Smith of East Wenatchee Swim Club. Kreuzenstein took second place in his age group's individual point standings, with 36 points, and also won the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.04), the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.23) and the 200yard IM (2:11.46). Kreuzenstein also took second place in the 100 back (1:03.04), the 200 free (1:59.08) and the 100 breast (1:10.85), and was third in the 100 free (55.85).

Rutecki took third place in her age group (9-10 girls) standings with 21 points, plus she won the 100 IM in 1:22.03 (with teammates Kristin Jones fourth in 1:23.78 and Nellie Metcalfe seventh in 1:30.23). Rutecki took third place in the 200 free (2:39.54), 50 free (37.16) and 100 fly (1:25.05), plus she teamed up with Jones, Metcalfe and Kathryn Bullock to take second place in the 200 medley relay (2:37.09).

Christina DiCostanzo, 16, won the 100 backstroke for girls age 15-19 in 1:09.00 for GSC's other event victory. DiCostanzo also took second place in the 200 back at 2:29.09, with Kaiser fifth in 2:32.56.

Lisse Focht, 14, placed second in the 400 IM at 5:16.66, followed by teammates DiCostanzo in fourth at 5:23.74 and Jenny Trucano in fifth place at 5:26.91. Focht also took third in the 200 free (2:11.97). Another event to see multiple GSC swimmers in the top five included a second place in the 1,650 free by Kaiser in 20:17.10, with teammate Natalie Hale fifth in 21:28.59.

Other GSC top-three finishes included a second place by Meagan Garcia in the 100 butterfly (1:30.06) and a second place by Metcalfe in the 200 free (2:55.95).

Four Glacier Swim Club members - the two Hughes brothers, Kaiser and Mike Fishel - will be among seven Southeast swimmers competing for Team Alaska this week in the Western Zone Championships Aug. 13-20 in Fresno, Calif. The other Southeast swimmers on the 33-swimmer Team Alaska squad are Maren `Rikka' Brunner of Petersburg's Viking Swim Club, Kieran Jacobson-Ross of Sitka's Baranof Barracudas Swim Club and Ben Voetberg of the Ketchikan Killer Whales.
