Polaris House sincerely thanks Genevieve Gagne-Hawes, Brian Wallace and the Juneau Empire for the wonderful article on our clubhouse. It feels good to get such great community recognition.
Building a community at Polaris House
We want to stress our support from Gastineau Human Services (GHS). We rent space from them at a substantial discount. We have access to all their programs from GED classes to the carving shop generously operated by Tlingit & Haida. They gave us the use of the GHS community greenhouse and gardens to use as we wish and provide all the tools, fertilizer and soil conditioners. Any time we need help finding extra space or other support, GHS has always accommodated us. They also provide peer counseling and support as well as 24-hour instant security should we need it. I have never worked with a more helpful organization, nor one more dedicated to helping those destitute and in trouble.
We are also grateful for the support we and our members receive from Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Alaska Housing, Job Service, the Unitarian Universalist Church, St. Vincent's, the Glory Hole and all those service organizations dedicated to helping those who need it most. JAMHI has been going beyond the treatment services provided to most of our members, and helping with extensive legal and social services paper work.
We are a new organization, and thanks to the support of GHS and all these wonderful service organizations, and the Empire, we will thrive. Thanks to all from Polaris House.
