ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The U.S. Alpine Championships will return to Alaska's Alyeska Resort next year.

The Girdwood resort hosted the championships in 2004 after the 2003 championships were moved from Alyeska to Lake Placid, N.Y., because of poor snow conditions. The 2007 event is scheduled for March 27 to April 3.
Larry Daniels, Alyeska's ski manager, says he contacted the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association about hosting the event in 2008 and learned there was an opportunity to host it a year earlier.
"(Alyeska) is a great venue," he said. "And one of the best benefits is having had it so recently. The organizational effort will be less. We've already plowed this ground."
Event managers were looking to hold the championships in the Western United States, according to Juliann Fritz, a spokeswoman for the championships.
"It's been in the East the past two years, and we like to keep it balanced between regions," she said. "(Alyeska) did a great job (in 2004). Everyone rallied around the event."
