One rotten apple costs support for ATV park

Posted: Monday, August 13, 2007

There have been quite a few letters to the editor in the Juneau Empire arguing the pros and cons of all-terrain vehicle riding in the community, and I have followed the issue closely while trying to consider all positions and statements fairly.

Sound off on the important issues at

But my own personal decision was formed recently while walking our dogs on the Dredge Lake trails. Even though the area has been off limits to ATVs for many years, some of Juneau's ATV enthusiasts decided that they needed to tear around on these trails, leaving them rutted and torn up as well as doing "doughnuts" to leave their childish marks carved in the ground.

The blame for shot-up signs at Echo Cove can be laid on non-ATV riders, but it's impossible to blame ATV tracks in a banned area on anyone other than ATV riders with a blatant disregard for the law and the community. To whoever it was that did this - you can rest assured that if it comes to a vote, your actions have cost you and your fellow riders my support.

All it takes is one bad apple to spoil the entire basket.
