Nicklin to present on Humpback whales

Posted: Thursday, August 13, 2009

Flip Nicklin, a world-renowed underwater photographer, will present a talk and slideshow on Humpback whales Thursday, Aug. 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hearthside Books and Toys at the Nugget Mall. He'll also sign the book "Humpback: Unveiling the Mysteries" by Jim Darling in which his work is featured.

Nicklin's 30-year career has specialized in marine mammals, especially whales and dolphins. He is a National Geographic contributing photographer, and has more than 5,500 dives under his belt. His ability to free dive to depths of up to 90 feet allows him to swim near enough to record whale behavior without interrupting it.

Chris Johns, editor-in-chief at National Geographic Magazine called the book "indispensable for anyone with a sense of wonder about whales. It's a field guide, primer, and fascinating read all in one. If you've ever wondered why whales sing, what researchers do, and where best to see humpbacks, this is a must-read."
