JUNEAU - Coast Guard veteran Mark Farmer was certified as a candidate for mayor Monday, making Juneau's mayoral race the first officially competitive one in the Oct. 6 municipal elections. Farmer will square off with incumbent Mayor Bruce Botelho.

Two more seats on the Juneau Assembly and three School Board seats also will be on the ballot. The incumbents in those seats have not filed for re-election, and one, Assembly member Sara Chambers, said she won't seek re-election.

The election filing period closes at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
