Each year the Juneau School District screens and evaluates children ages 3-21 as a part of an effort to identify children who may be in need of special education services. If parents or professionals who work with children have concerns about a child, they can refer the child to JSD for screening or evaluation.
If an evaluation is necessary, it will be done only with written consent from the parents. Evaluations and special education services are provided at no expense to the parents. Special education services are provided to students who experience some type of disability. These services are methods and practices that allow the student to benefit from an appropriate public education.
There are procedural safeguards in place which protect parent and student rights, guaranteed under both State and Federal law. A packet that describes parent and student rights in special education programs can be obtained from the Student Services Office (523-1754) in the basement of Harborview Elementary School located at 1255 Glacier Avenue.
