Fear is policy in post-9/11 America

This is regarding Rich Moniak's column in the Juneau Empire on Juneau dock barriers ("Restricted access on People's Wharf," July 11). Moniak is spot-on with respect to the use of expensive, faux security measures to enhance a climate of fear in which Big Brother will take care of us.

Sound off on the important issues at

Homeland Security (a department that should never have been created) has continued to stumble in analyzing real risks and security hazards. At the same time, personnel and resources from FEMA to the Coast Guard have been distracted from their real responsibilities to joist with phantom threats.

We once had a president who, when America was faced with far greater peril, said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Unfortunately, 9/11 hit America at a nadir in its historic leadership so that fear has become policy.
