JUNEAU - The Juneau Lyric Opera will host the 8th Mid-Summer Vocal Festival on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Chapel by the Lake.

The Festival will feature Mozart's "Grand Mass in C minor" and is directed by Dr. Byron McGilvray of Athens, Texas. Bruce Simonson will be the assistant conductor and Sue Kazama will accompany.

"For over 20 years, Dr. McGilvray has been coming to Juneau to conduct ... for the Juneau Lyric Opera, including eight summer concerts. This is one of the toughest but most beautiful pieces we've sung," participant Dan Wayne said.

Wayne said 70 singers practiced daily for weeks just for the one-night performance.

The C minor mass is one of Mozart's most well-known pieces and is incomplete, missing part of the Credo and all of the Agnus Dei. It's unknown why the mass, composed in 1782-83, was never completed.

The concert is one-hour long with no intermission. Free food will be offered at the reception afterwards.
