I've spent five seasons in Southeast Alaska either purse seining or guiding ecotouring trips between Juneau and Sitka and I can't believe that the Tongass is facing another threat from commercial logging.
Why are Murkowski and Bush so intent on harming two industries (fishing and ecotouring) that are successful and nonsubsidized in favor of one that has not proven economically viable even under more-than-favorable terms? The market had said, again and again, that large-scale logging in Southeast simply does not work.
Before voting these hypocritical conservatives out, the people of Southeast should let them know that their plan is dumb. Make a trip to Port Houghton soon if you want to get an idea how bad an idea it is.
