Danny Godinez starts Alaska tour in Juneau

JUNEAU - The Danny Godinez Band, an improvisation-based jam band from Seattle, will begin its eighth Alaska tour with a three-day run in Juneau.

The group plays at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at The Hangar on the Wharf, before heading to Haines to play the Southeast Alaska State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 16. Danny Godinez opened its tour with a show Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Imperial Billiard & Bar.

Danny Godinez has toured the United States three times and is preparing to release its first full-length studio compact disc. The group has two live CDs, recorded in Anchorage.

"The Danny Godinez Band is one of the sharpest, most melodic improvisation-based bands I've heard in quite some time," wrote Mick Skidmore in Relix Magazine. "The band draws on an array of influences, from Afro-Cuban, jazz and singer-songwriters, wrapping it all in a complex web of acoustic and electric guitar, intricate jazz rhythms and superb keyboard work."

The group plays the Pioneer Bar in Haines on Sunday, Aug. 17, then Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 18 and 19, at the Red Onion in Skagway before heading to the Interior.

McPhetres to host four-band punk bill

JUNEAU - Old Goat, Juneau's lone industrial, Satanic metal band, will headline a four-band punk bill Saturday, Aug. 16, at McPhetres Hall on Fourth Street.

Local bands The Shoe Whores, Groping For Elmo and Induced Vomit - a revived version of the hard-core, splatter-punk band Induced Vomit that played in Juneau in the late 1980s before moving to Seattle - also will play. Music begins at 8 p.m.

The show is the second in a series of Saturday night shows in August at McPhetres organized by local punk fans, including Jimi Kennedy, a member of Induced Vomit. Bands play from 8 p.m. to midnight, and disc jockeys follow from midnight to 3 a.m.

"This is a show for music lovers," Kennedy said. "(Old Goat) is phenomenal. They will blow you away. It's a real treat to get them to come out."

As of presstime, it was unknown which DJs are scheduled to appear Saturday. Interested DJs or bands should call Kennedy at 463-1599 for more information.

Local bands Fluffy La La and Urbana Desert are scheduled to play at McPhetres on Aug. 23. Other acts will be announced.
