A letter to the editor (Aug. 12) asks good questions about testing for asbestos at the city's rock quarry at Stabler's point. The quarry contains dozens of minerals including a small amount of naturally occurring asbestos.
Juneau, the Department of Transportation and Secon, Inc. have all tested rock and rock product samples, and the city is testing air on a daily basis during all quarrying operations, including blasting.
To date, eight rock product tests have been returned, none have measured asbestos. Nearly daily, additional test results are becoming available. The city remains committed to ongoing testing, reporting, and to preparing local regulations about naturally occurring asbestos.
Those interested can see the city's staff report to the Assembly on the Web at www.juneau.org or call my office to ask further questions.
