Early Childhood Partnerships expand to 11

Posted: Sunday, August 15, 2010

Alaska's network of early childhood partnerships is expanding to 11, with the recent addition of coalitions in the Northwest Arctic Borough and Wrangell. With support from Best Beginnings, the Wrangell Early Childhood Coalition and Ilisaaq, in the Northwest Arctic Borough, will organize and build early childhood partnerships in their communities. Support for these partnerships was provided by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development through Best Beginnings.

They join nine other partnerships based in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Gustavus, Homer, Hoonah, Juneau, Ketchikan, Kodiak, and the Mat Su Borough.

The new partnerships in Wrangell and the Northwest Arctic Borough will organize and coordinate partnerships composed of people from a wide range of sectors with an interest or stake in early childhood.

The partnership model is based on the belief that a diverse group of local residents are in the best position to understand the needs of young children and their families within their communities. By working together, partnerships can break down barriers, identify gaps, and design solutions to meet their communities' needs.

"Our goal is to build a network of community and regional organizations that support early childhood services. The result will be better, more efficient services for families - in family-friendly communities," said Abbe Hensley, Executive Director of Best Beginnings.

In addition to financial support, Best Beginnings provides organizational and technical assistance.

Best Beginnings is a public-private partnership that mobilizes people and resources to ensure all Alaska children begin school ready to succeed.
