Juneau Rifle and Pistol Club - NRA-Registered Alaska Short Range (200- to 300-yard) High-Power Rifle Championship: Meet at 9 a.m. at the Hank Harmon Rifle Range on Montana Creek Road for 10 a.m. shooting start. The course will feature four shooting positions - standing, sitting, prone rapid fire and prone slow fire. Participants will shoot 80 shots (not including sighters), 20 per position. the two prone position shoots will be at 300 yards. Alaska's current state champion, Chief Warrant Officer Ron Fleischhacker may attend and, if he attends, a shooting clinic will take place. Fleischhacker took third place last weekend at the U.S. Service Rifle championship at Camp Perry, Ohio, and took 10th place overall. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth basketball registration - Registration for Parks & Rec Youth Basketball League teams runs from Aug. 12-23 for players ages 6-18 (as of Oct. 1, 2002). The season features three preseason practices, a weekly practice and Saturday games from Sept. 30 through Dec. 14. Registration takes place at the Zach Gordon Youth Center, the Parks & Rec office on the second floor of the City Hall building downtown, or online at http://www.juneau.org/parksrec/youinfo. Mount Jumbo Gym rentals - The Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation will take reservations for rentals of the Mount Jumbo Gymnasium starting on Monday, Aug. 12. The gym is open for rentals beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The cost is $27 per hour. The Mount Jumbo Gym is also open for preschool open gyms starting on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Preschool open gyms take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and they are open for children age 6 and younger. The preschool open gyms are free and parents need to stay at the gym with their children at all times. The Terry Miller Gym is currently open and available for rent. Juneau Waterfowlers' Fair and Shooting Clinic - Meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Juneau Gun Club, off Montana Creek Road. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the Juneau Gun Club cohost this annual event to help prepare local hunters for the upcoming waterfowl hunting seasons. Presentations will be on using decoys, how to prepare waterfowl for dinner, local hunting regulations, hunting on the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge and practicing ethical hunting behavior. The event costs $10 and the fee covers the seminar, clay targets, patterning ammunition and one box of steel ammo for clay target shooting. Hunters may bring additional ammo. Summer physicals for Juneau-Douglas High School athletes - Sports physicals for high school athletes are available at Zach Gordon Youth Center from 1:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays starting on July 16. Carl Bausler, who works at the Juneau-Douglas High School Teen Health Center during the school year, gives the free physicals during the summers at Zach Gordon. The service is available to incoming freshmen and returning high school students only. Parents or guardians need to sign a consent form before the physical, which is available at Zach Gordon. All high school athletes need to have current physicals on file before being allowed to participate in team practices. Appointments are needed for each physical. Juneau Rifle and Pistol Club - The parking lot of the Hank Harmon Rifle Range, Mile 1.5 Montana Creek Road, will have temporary closures over the two weeks starting on Thursday, Aug. 15, for paving. Youth open gym - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays (Aug. 17 and 24) at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Friday youth open gyms at Floyd Dryden Middle School are on hiatus until the school year starts again in the fall. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12.
