My first thoughts when I read of a police officer defending himself against, of all things, a samurai sword was, "What damn fool is going to crawl out of the woodwork, crying foul play?"
Sound off on the important issues at
What would Fred Oleson, the neighbor quoted in Monday's article "Residents question use of deadly force," have done had the situation befallen his wife or children? Would he scamper back to his house to get some spray gel or a can of black pepper? Would the samurai warrior patiently wait for him to return?
In my 49-year residency, I have known many officers, including several chiefs, all of which won my respect, even when they stopped me. They too were doing what they took the oath of their job to do - uphold the law.
I say God bless the officer, his family and the entire staff of the Juneau Police Department.
