Minority atheists dictate textbooks

Letter to the editor

Here is a surprising fact concerning the discussion of whether God or accident (evolution) is the creator. Gallup polls taken in 1982, 1993, 1997, 1999 and 2001 indicate a consistent 45 percent of those polled believe God created humans. Thirty-seven percent believe in a combination of God and evolution (evo-creationalists). This, incidentally, is the category in which Charles Darwin falls. Twelve percent believe in evolution (National Geographic, November 2004). Certainly publishers of high school biology texts are in this category.

I assume the polls and the samples accurately reflect our population. The shocking thing to me is we allow an atheistic minority to dictate what is taught to our children in our public schools. Maybe at the local level a referendum rather than a school board vote on the issue would correct the inequity?
