Golf tournament to raise funds for nonprofit group

Posted: Sunday, August 17, 2008

The inaugural Healing Hand Foundation golf tournament takes place on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Mt. Fairweather Golf Course in Gustavus - and with it comes a chance at $10,000 for a hole-in-one.

This scramble-format golf tournament will raise money for the Healing Hand Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium's Alaska Native patients with unmet health care needs. The Healing Hand Foundation provides small grants to patients who have unmet needs in three areas - durable medical goods such as wheelchairs and colostomy supplies, pharmaceuticals that aren't normally available from the SEARHC pharmacy and patient travel costs that aren't covered by SEARHC.

Teams of four can register, and individuals will be assigned to incomplete teams by random draw.

There will be an Allen Marine catamaran taking golfers and non-golfing guests to Gustavus from Juneau for the tournament, and a light breakfast, boxed lunch and dinner will be served. The tournament costs $130 for golfers using their own equipment (range balls will be provided) and $150 for golfers needing rental clubs. Non-golfing guests pay $60 for the travel and meals. Mulligans can be purchased for $10 each (up to two per player). There is a 60-player limit for the tournament and registration is required by Wednesday, Aug. 20. Beginning golfers are encouraged to participate. There also will be a $10,000 hole-in-one contest open to all players.

The schedule for Saturday, Aug. 23, begins at 6 a.m. when golfers arrive at the loading zone by the harbormaster's office at the Don T. Statter Public Boat Harbor in Auke Bay for registration, door prize raffle tickets and breakfast. The Allen Marine catamaran departs at 7 a.m. and arrives in Gustavus for an 11:30 a.m. first tee time. The catamaran returns to Auke Bay at 6 p.m., with dinner, an awards banquet and door prize raffle on the boat ride.
