Juneau-Douglas High School football - The Crimson Bears host the Palmer Moose in a nonconference game, junior varsity at 5 p.m. and varsity at 8 p.m. at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. Due to construction projects at Floyd Dryden Middle School, there is extremely limited parking at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. The Juneau Youth Football League will be running a shuttle van from 7 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. so people can park at the Church of Christ on Trinity Drive, Glacier Valley School, the Church of the Nazarene on Mendenhall Loop Road, or at St. Brendan's Episcopal Church on Mendenhall Loop Road.

Golden North Salmon Derby - The 57th annual salmon derby runs from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, with some validation stations open during the morning only. The derbies weigh-in stations are at Amalga Harbor, Auke Bay, Douglas Harbor, Tee Harbor and a packer boat anchored near South Shelter Island. All fish must be weighed in by 6 p.m. on Sunday, and the packer boat must be back to Auke Bay by that time. Derby tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for children age 12-younger. Southeast Road Runners club - Nifty Fifty Relay: This 50-kilometer relay race for two or three runners has been canceled for the 2003 running season. It will return in 2004 with a revamped route.
Juneau Disc Golf Association - 'Third of the First' open disc golf tournament: Pro, advanced amateur and intermediate amateur players meet at 9 a.m. at the Dimond Park Disc Golf Course for a 10 a.m. tee-off, while men, women and junior amateurs meet at 12:30 p.m. for a 1 p.m. tee-off. The second round for pro, advanced amateur and intermediate amateur players also tees off at 1 p.m. Pros, advanced amateur and intermediate amateur players will complete two rounds with a $20 entry fee. Men, women and junior (age 15-younger) amateurs will do one round with a $10 entry fee. The pros will win cash and the amateurs will win prizes. Info: J.D. Glacier Swim Club age 8-younger team tryouts - A tryout clinic to introduce young athletes to competitive swimming takes place from 4:30-5:15 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, Aug. 11-21, for swimmers age 8-younger at the Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool. There will be a time trial from 8-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. The clinic cost is $25 if paid by July 31, or $30 after Aug. 1. This clinic is for young swimmers ages 6-8 who already know some swimming basics. Older Glacier Swim Club members will help team coaches so each swimmer will get lots of individual attention. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth basketball registration - Sign-up for youths age 6-18 will run Aug. 11-22. The season runs from early October through mid-December. The fee is $40 per player, with discounts for families with three or more children signing up. Volunteer coaches and paid referees are also needed. Juneau Adult Hockey Association registration - Registration for the 2003 early winter season opened on Friday, Aug. 1, and continues through the month of August for JAHA's coed recreational hockey leagues. The early winter season runs from Oct. 1 through Dec. 15. This is a two-tiered league - with a division for experienced hockey players and one for older players or those new to the game. Both divisions are coed, open to players age 18-older and are non-checking leagues. New this year is a women's league, designed for novice and intermediate players who don't want to compete in the coed leagues. Klondike 'Trail of '98' International Road Relay - Local runners who haven't found a Klondike team or local teams seeking Klondike runners can contact the Southeast Road Runners Club for a match. The race starts Sept. 5 in Skagway and finishes Sept. 6 in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Treadwell Arena summer programs - Through Aug. 22, the arena is available for drop-in basketball from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesdays; drop-in in-line skating from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4-7 p.m. on Mondays, and from 3-5 p.m. on Fridays; drop-in tennis from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays; and drop-in in-line hockey from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rental times also are available from 7:30-10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, and from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In-line skating and basketball fees are $4 for adults, $2 for youth (17 and under), $1.90 for seniors (65 and older). Hockey and tennis passes are $5 for adults, $4 for youth and $3 for seniors. Juneau Youth Football League cheerleading practice - Practice for peewee (age 8-9), junior (age 10-11) and senior divisions (sixth through eighth grade girls) is from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Glacier Valley School covered play area. Wear sweats (pants or shorts without zippers) and tennis shoes with good support. Bring a water bottle. Slots are still available but are filling fast. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Juneau Disc Golf Association's Sunday Singles mini-tournaments - A weekly Sunday Singles disc golf mini-tournament takes place at 4 p.m. each Sunday (except when there are big JDGA tournaments) at the Dimond Park disc golf course.
