Election letters policy

Posted: Friday, August 18, 2006

During the election season, the Empire will run letters about candidates that deal with issues, politicians' past actions and experiences that reveal an office-seeker's character. The paper will not run pieces that appear to be part of a letter-writing campaign or that are simply promotional pieces without substance or specifics. Letters by candidates will not be allowed.

The newspaper will accept letters related to the primary election until noon Friday, Aug 18. The last day primary election-related letters will be published is Sunday, Aug. 20.

Letters should not exceed 400 words and must include the writer's name, hometown and phone number.

The Empire will edit submissions for length, clarity, grammar and libelous content. The Empire does not publish copies of letters sent to third parties. The newspaper does not run petitions signed by multiple people on the opinion page.

The Empire prints as many letters as possible, but is unable to print all of them. Those that are printed represent the range of letters that are received.
