Two Student Symphonies shows scheduled for Friday
JUNEAU - The Juneau Student Symphonies, under the direction of Rick Trostel, will perform two dance music concerts on Friday, Aug. 20 - noon at the State Office Building and 7 p.m. at the University of Alaska Southeast Noyes Pavilion.
From polkas to bluegrass to rock, they will be playing works by Strauss, Rimsky-Korsakov, Gliere, Ravel and Valens.
Part of the Juneau Symphony, the Student Symphonies are youth orchestras with no upper age limit.
They provide experience and education for potential symphony musicians.
Performances are free but donations accepted.
Glitter Girls to hold fund-raiser Saturday
JUNEAU - The Alaska Glitter Girls, a 2-year-old group of elementary students ages 7-11 that sing inspirational Christian music, are holding their first fundraiser dinner from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Tlingit and Haida Community Building.
Plates are $10 and include fresh king salmon, garden salad and rice.
The night also includes entertainment by Sadao and Teresa Uehara, Earth and Vessel and Island Time
All proceeds go to the group's upcoming trip to the Alaska State Fair, which starts Aug. 26 in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The girls have traveled to Seattle, California and all over Southeast Alaska.
