Firm sues to keep housing untaxed

FAIRBANKS - A firm that manages housing at Fort Wainwright has asked a judge to declare the housing exempt from property taxes.

The city of Fairbanks is interested in adding the 1,800 homes for soldiers and their families to its tax rolls.

The lawsuit, filed in state court by North Haven Communities, says the U.S. government is exempt from many taxes, and is "both a direct and indirect owner" of the Fort Wainwright housing.

The suit comes more than two months after the Fairbanks North Star Borough cut a deal with the company to avoid taxes in favor of annual payments.
