Editorial cartoon crosses the line

Posted: Thursday, August 19, 2010

The editorial cartoon in the Aug. 17 edition of the Empire attacking the Muslim faith marks a new low point in the drift of the Empire from a paper that used to support community and American values of tolerance, respect, and diversity to a right-wing rag that actively promotes the right's nasty and divisive agenda of hatred and intolerance.

In the interests of listening to free discussion of varied points of view, I have kept my subscription, but this cartoon crosses the line from free discussion to promotion of a smear campaign against all Muslims based on the phony "Ground Zero Mosque" issue. The proposed Muslim cultural center in New York is not a mosque at all; nor is it actually at Ground Zero. The issue is another fake creation of Fox "News" and a handful of activists, just like their bogus Shirley Sherrod, Van Jones, and ACORN "scandals".

We need to remember that the vast majority of Muslims in America are our peaceful friends, neighbors, and coworkers; people who make positive contributions to our society. American Muslims are our best allies in the war of ideas against the few violent extremists who distort the faith.

The freedom of religion in our Constitution deserves everyone's active support, and we need to keep in mind that it applies equally to all religions, without exception. As Americans, we need to stand with and not against our friends and neighbors.
