Fire burns three Akiachak buildings

AKIACHAK - Alaska State Troopers said a fire has destroyed an old elementary school and two other buildings in the village of Akiachak.

The fire late Monday night started from a torch lit by a teens and adults playing hide and seek in the old school. Damage is estimated at $200,000.

Akiachak is community of 628 on the Kuskokwim River about 18 miles northeast of Bethel.

Troopers said seven people ranging in age from 13 to 20 entered the old school through an unlocked door.

The power was turned off and one person lit a torch made of wood and fabric to help see.

The torch was set down but not fully extinguished.

A truck inside one of the buildings also burned.

The property belongs to the Yupiit School District.
