Coeur wins out

Posted: Thursday, August 20, 2009

Let's be clear about jobs for Juneau and the Kensington mine. It doesn't take too many workers to take mine waste and just dump it in a lake. It saves money that would have been paid to workers to build and manage mine tailings piles.

The money saved by allowing Coeur to use Slate Lake as a dump site is money that should go to Juneau workers, contributing to the local economy while doing a better job of safeguarding Juneau's water. Instead, we get a deal where the mine sends a larger profit out of state, we get fewer jobs and a horrible precedent is set for treatment of waters that support Alaska's fishing industry. Where were all the voices that are supposed to stand up for Alaska jobs?
