Title and firm: Juneau resident Paul Curry owns and operates Southeast Extinguisher Services with his wife, Yvette.
Services: Southeast Extinguisher specializes in providing homes and businesses with new fire extinguishers as well as other safety and first aid supplies. Curry said he also can maintain existing canisters and demonstrate how to use an extinguisher in an emergency.
Curry said people don't realize extinguishers can lose pressure and become less effective over time. To avoid this, he said, people should have their canisters checked a year after purchase and again six years after purchase. He said an extinguisher should be recharged and refilled completely after 12 years.
Curry said he also conducts informal inspections for business and home owners pointing out the areas where inspectors would find fault.
Quotable: "People don't really think about fire extinguishers. Every business has to have one and they are usually tucked away in the back and nobody thinks about them until they need it."
Background: Curry has worked for Capital City Fire and Rescue as a volunteer for the past four years.
He said he got the idea for his company through working with the department. Curry said he would go into buildings and notice either the existing extinguisher had not been maintained or there wasn't one available.
Family: Curry lives with his wife, Yvette, and their daughter, Chelsey, 9, and son, Jordan, 5.
Contact information: Curry said his business is a mobile service but he can receive mail inquiries at P.O. Box 34681, Juneau, AK 99803. He also can be reached at (907) 790-2522 or online at www.seextinguisher.com.
