The art of disagreement

Posted: Tuesday, August 21, 2001

Healthy disagreement and debate are hallmarks of democracy and we've seen some lively discussion about the future of Juneau lately on the opinion page of the Empire. However, Rob Skinner's My Turn crosses the line of civility in its vituperative and unsupported personal attacks on Assembly members Marc Wheeler and Frankie Pillifant.

It's possible to disagree without being disagreeable. While I disagree with a lot of what I've read in the Empire lately, and with the fact that your publisher has seen fit to insert himself into the editorial process. I'd like to assume that the writers in all cases have the best interests of Juneau at heart. What we have are genuine differences of opinion about what is best for our community.

One thing we can all agree on is that we should do everything in our power to keep the Legislature and Capital here in Juneau. And if we are really serious, now is the time to focus on that and respectfully agree to disagree about the other stuff.
