The community of Gustavus will present a drama production titled "The Chronicles of Strawberry Point" over Labor Day weekend.
Strawberry Point was the original name of the flatlands covered in wild strawberries located 50 miles west of Juneau and first homesteaded by pioneering settlers in 1914. The name of the community was officially changed to Gustavus in 1925, but continued to be called Strawberry Point by the homesteaders and newcomers for decades to come.
In collaboration with Gustavus Historical Archives and Antiquities, and with the support of local and outside talent, the play will be performed from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday night, Aug. 30, at the Gustavus gymnasium. Admission is free.
Gustavus has extended a special invitation to Juneau and the surrounding communities, many of which had an important role to play in the lives of the early pioneers. The idea for this community play was conceived and developed by long-time resident and locally-celebrated author Sally Lesh.
