Title and firm: Co-owner, Sunburst on the Wharf.

Services: A full-service tanning salon, Sunburst offers three different types of tans: regular, super and standing. Patrons can purchase single tans or packages, which are made up of units, or minutes.

Biographical info: Stephanie Maloney, 23, was born in Erie, Pa., where she attended Central High School. She met her boyfriend, David Sheakley, five years ago. They moved to Juneau in September of 1999 and Maloney got a job at Sunburst. When it went up for sale, she and Sheakley purchased it. I worked here for the summer and it was for sale and we just said What the hey? Maloney recalled. We like Juneau. I have a 3-year-old and its a good community to raise our child. The people are more friendly than the big city we are from.

Maloney has had an interest in tanning for some time; she got her certification from the International Smart Tan Network in July of 1998. She still enjoys tanning though by the end of the 12- or 13-hour days she puts in at the shop, I dont want to lie around, she laughed.

Family: Maloney and Sheakley have a daughter named Abby.

Notable: Sunburst gets 100 to 120 customers a day. Most of them are locals, but theres a wide range in age from the youngest 15 is the minimum age to the oldest, an 82-year-old woman with osteoperosis. They love us because we have sun in Juneau, Maloney said.

To make tanning a comfortable experience, Sunbursts rooms are private. Fans are available, and customers can either stand up or lie down to tan. They can go in au natural, or they can go in with underclothes on, Maloney said. Goggles are supplied, because you should always protect your eyes.

Quotable: I think it boosts a lot of peoples confidence tanning. It makes you so happy.

Employees: Maloney has several assistants who are paid in tanning time.
