Logging acceptable, but not on a massive scale

Posted: Tuesday, August 22, 2000

At a meeting in Hoonah recently regarding President Clinton's roadless policy, I expressed my opposition to building any more logging roads in the Tongass.

My opposition is based on the amount of clearcut logging that I see around Port Frederick.

I do not oppose road building for the purpose of honest development, such as laying power cable. Again, I am not against logging, I am against the magnitude that is happening around Hoonah. I am against the export of raw logs and jobs to Asia. We must show concern for the next generation and the generation after that.
