Hatch deserves our support and prayers

My heart ached when I read of the unfortunate event that required the use of deadly force by a member of the Juneau Police Department. My heart ached for the family of the individual who lost his life, but more for the sergeant who found himself in this unfortunate event.

Sound off on the important issues at

I know Sgt. Paul Hatch. He graduated a year before me in high school at Juneau-Douglas High School, and I knew him from the martial arts class we took back in the 1980s. Hatch also was the officer who personally took care of my mother when she was in an unfortunate accident three or four years ago. He even called my mother to see if she was doing OK.

I personally believe Hatch did everything possible to defuse what sounded like a very volatile situation. It sounds to me like he went above and beyond the call of duty to protect the life of this individual, even going so far as to put his own life in jeopardy to defuse the situation.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Hatch, because this is an incident that he will have to live with for the rest of his life. Only those who have been in this situation before can understand what he is experiencing. If there is anyone in Juneau who deserves our support and prayers during this difficult time, it is Hatch.
