The third annual Juneau Local Foods Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center. This free community event, which in 2009 drew more than 2,300 Juneauites, features how-to workshops on gardening, backyard farming and related topics and also offers Juneau's largest farmer's market of the year, with upwards of 30 vendors from across Southeast Alaska offering locally grown, baked, harvested or prepared foods.
How-to workshop topics this year include Composting with Worms; Jams, Jellies & Preserves from Southeast Alaska's Abundance; Raising Chickens; Growing Organic Fruits & Veggies in Southeast; Fish Smoking and more. Experienced gardeners will be on hand to speak one-to-one with individuals about their particular gardening concerns.
