John Kenneth Barkey met his untimely death on Aug. 3, 2010, after a car accident near Yuma, Ariz. on July 18.
John was born April 26, 1933, in Pittsburgh. John served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955. He met his lifetime bride, Sue, in Seattle in 1955 and they were wed three months later. They began their family and resided in Seattle until the family moved to Juneau in 1971. John's passion was floor covering and it lasted more than 50 years. He founded John's Custom Carpets in Juneau in 1973.
John enjoyed many activities prior to his illnesses, such as hunting, fishing, water skiing, snowmobiles, and coaching baseball in Washington and Alaska. His family truly enjoyed his amazing whistling talents and appreciated him being a handyman extraordinaire over the years. John was also a lifetime spike member of the Home Builders' Association.
John's survivors include his wife Sue, his children Ken Barkey, Russ (Jenny) Barkey and Cyndi (Guy) Gleason. Grandchildren include Keith Barkey, Cori (Shawna) Barkey, Dirk Tunison, Danielle (Erik Knutson) Tunison, and John and Steven Larson. Great-grandchildren include Mason Barkey, Gunnar Knutson, and Seth and Sara Manley. John's brother Bill is the last remaining sibling back east plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
