• Juneau-Douglas High School football - The Crimson Bears host the West Anchorage Eagles in a Cook Inlet Football Conference game at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park. The varsity game is at 8 p.m., the junior varsity plays at 5 p.m.

Friday-Saturday, Aug. 27-28

• Juneau-Douglas High School swimming and diving - Juneau Invitational: The Crimson Bears host the season-opening meet for Southeast teams. Swimming and diving events start at 6 p.m. on Friday, while diving start at 10:30 a.m. and swimming competition at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday at Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool.

Saturday, Aug. 28

• Juneau-Douglas High School cross-country running - Juneau Invitational: The Crimson Bears host their only home meet of the season at time TBA at the Treadwell Trails near Sandy Beach in Douglas.

• Juneau Youth Football League - Pee-Wee Division: Cowboys vs. Rams, 11 a.m. and Seahawks vs. Titans, 1 p.m. Junior Division: Badgers vs. Hawkeyes, 9 a.m. and Huskies vs. Spartans, 3 p.m. Senior Division: Bruins vs. Cougars, 5 p.m. All games at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park, except Hurricanes vs. Sitka/Ketchikan Senior Division game which is on the road at time TBA.



• Juneau-Douglas High School tennis team - The JDHS tennis team is recruiting players for its second season. Students will all levels of tennis experience are welcome to participate. Practices are held at JRC/The Alaska Club's Mendenhall Valley location on weekdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The season has just started and will last through mid-October. • Juneau Adult Hockey Association registration - Registration for the 2004 autumn coed and women's leagues is taking place during August. JAHA features four tiers of hockey based on experience and/or gender for players age 18-older (younger players need an exemption to join the league). League play for the autumn season runs from Sept. 20 through Dec. 15. Registration runs through Sept. 1 and takes place at Treadwell Arena in Douglas, the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office downtown and at Skater's Edge in the Mendenhall Valley. • Juneau Parks and Recreation youth basketball registration - Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation youth basketball registration for ages 6-18 opened Monday, Aug. 16, and continues through Friday. Sept. 3. Forms are available on the Web at, or can be picked up at the Parks and Recreation office on the second floor of City Hall. Fee is $40, with discounts for families with three of more children. The season runs from Oct. 2-Dec. 11. Volunteer coaches and paid game officials are also needed, and training is available. • Note to waterfowl hunters - Hunters seeking waterfowl hunting permits to take waterfowl, snipe or cranes on the Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge can obtain the permits at Western Auto, Rayco Sales or at the Douglas office of the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The permit is meant as an orientation for hunters using the refuge and also allows ADF&G to collect duck hunting effort and harvest data. All hunters should pay careful attention to the orientation information that comes with the permit. Info: Douglas office of ADF&G, 465-4265.

• Waterfowl Hunting Clinic - The 2004 clinic is hosted by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and the Juneau Gun Club and will provide local waterfowl hunters a chance to review local regulations, hunting ethics and safety rules and a chance to improve their shooting skills. The course takes place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Juneau Gun Club's shooting range on Montana Creek Road. The cost is $10 per person and covers the seminar, clay targets and one box of steel ammo. There also will be ammo available to test pattern your shotgun. Info: ADF&G Douglas office, 465-4265.

• Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool fall schedule - The pool's fall operating schedule starts on Monday, Aug. 23, and runs through Nov. 7. The two main changes to the schedule are the elimination of the 8:45 p.m. swims on Mondays and Wednesdays and the 9 p.m. swims on Tuesdays and Thursdays. • Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting Saturday, Aug. 28, at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Juneau Disc Golf Association registration - The Juneau Disc Golf Association's season is underway. The new course is at Aant'iyeik Park, located above Glacier Highway between the Auke Rec turnoff and Lena Loop Road. • Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.

• Adult open gyms - Basketball and volleyball open gyms for adults will take place from 7-9 p.m. starting on Friday, Aug. 27, at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost is $5 per session and participants should bring their own volleyballs or basketballs. Ten-session punchcards are available for $40 each and are available from the Juneau Community Schools office or from the gym supervisor. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Treadwell Arena schedule - The arena is closed for maintenance through Monday, Sept. 6. It will reopen with ice on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Info: Treadwell Arena, 586-0410, or on the Web at
