Sitka man indicted on 19 charges of child sex abuse

Defendant faces up to 1,881 years in prison

A grand jury indicted a 42-year-old Sitka man Friday on 19 felony counts of sexual abuse of a minor for allegedly abusing four victims over an eight-year period.

The Sitka Police Department arrested Harmon J. Johnson on Tuesday and lodged him in the city jail. Johnson faces up to 1,881 years in prison if convicted of all counts.

Eight counts of the indictment charge Johnson with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree, each punishable by up to 99 years in prison. A first felony conviction for the charge can range between 20 and 35 years for each count, depending on the age of the victim, according to state statutes.

Eleven counts of the indictment charge Johnson with sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree, each punishable by up to 99 years in prison. A first felony conviction for the charge can range between five and 15 years for each count, according to state statutes.

Johnson has not previously been convicted of a felony in Alaska, according to court records.
