Young singers are invited to audition for the Alaska Youth Choir.
The Alaska Youth Choir was founded in 1994 and currently is under the musical direction of Missouri Smyth. Last year the choir split into two groups, a concert choir for the advanced voices and a resident training choir for the new singers.
The group of about 50 singers, ages 8 to 16, rehearses weekly and performs a number of concerts each year. Since 1997 members of the group also have performed outside of Juneau at special events and choir festivals. In Juneau the 28 members of the concert choir sang in the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Festival in New York.
This coming season, AYC is planning to perform at the four-day-long Children's Choirs 2001 Festival in Vancouver, B.C.
Auditions for new and returning choristers will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31 and a week later, on Sept. 7, at Northern Light United Church, 400 W. 11th Street. Missouri Smyth can be called at 780-5225 with questions or to arrange another audition time .
Tuition is $210 for the training choir and $325 for the concert choir. Limited scholarships are available based on financial need to assist with tuition expenses. Requirements of AYC are a positive attitude, dedication, dependability, focus, team involvement, and desire to achieve a high level of vocal accomplishment. Chorister and parental involvement in fund-raisers and volunteer duties is expected.
