Fitness Essentials sponsors programs

JUNEAU - Fitness Essentials is offering a free eight-week-long "Cancer Wellness Program" for people battling cancer and cancer survivors. The class meets once a week with a personal trainer from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays beginning Sept. 16 at Fitness Essentials, 1248 Glacier Ave., downtown.

Participants also get a free two-month gym membership while going through the program. Participants are asked to provide Fitness Essentials with a doctor's note stating that they can exercise and if they have any limitations.

"The Fit Diabetic," for people who are pre-diabetic or have diabetes, is an eight-week program that meets once a week from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays starting Sept. 16 at Fitness Essentials. Cost is $50, which includes full use of the gym.

"Juneau's Biggest Loser" is a 90-day weight loss challenge, for those who need to lose weight and become healthy.

This group will meet for a 9 a.m. weigh-in, followed by a 9:30 a.m. meeting, on Saturdays, beginning on Sept. 29 at Fitness Essentials. Debbie Stokes, certified nutrition and wellness consultant, will lead. Be prepared to have your picture taken on the first day. Cost is $65.

You do not need to be a gym member to join this program. Individual weight-loss counseling is also available upon request.

DanceFest to take place Aug. 31-Sept. 3

JUNEAU - DanceFest 2007 will take place from Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 at Centennial Hall. There will be dance classes by day and live music by night. Learn to swing, salsa, waltz, merengue, cha cha, tango, line dance, belly dance, samba, hip-hop and more. Take advantage of a preregistration discount until Saturday or register at the door.

Feature performances during the DanceFest include the following: Bobb Family Band at 9 p.m., with swing lesson at 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 31; Cuban band Havana NRG at 9 p.m., with salsa lesson at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 1; and BRAVEMonkey at 8:30 p.m., with nightclub 2-step lesson at 8 p.m.
