FAIRBANKS - Jury selection begins today in a first-degree murder trial that was moved from Nenana to Fairbanks.
Prosecutors have accused 33-year-old Charles Stevens of Nenana of stabbing 19-year-old Billy Moreland to death in a bar fight on March 5, 2006.
A mistrial was declared when the case went to trial in June 2007 because of a conflict of interest between a witness and Stevens' lawyer at the time, Bill Satterberg.
Two initial indictments of Stevens were dismissed after Superior Court Judge Robert Downes found deficiencies in the state's presentation of evidence to a grand jury.
Stevens wanted his trial to be heard in Nenana, but his petition was rejected by an appeals court. Downes says prospective jurors are being summoned from both Nenana and Fairbanks.
