In season: King and Dungeness crab, halibut and rockfish (peaks June-Sept.), king, sockeye, pink and chum salmon (runs June to Sept., peaks in July), coho salmon (June-Nov.), freshwater brook trout (peaks Aug.-Sept.), Dolly Varden (June-Aug.), bear viewing at Pack Creek (June-Sept., peaks July and Aug.), freshwater Northern pike (peaks July-Aug.), deer (Aug.-Dec., depending on area), mountain goat (Aug.-Dec., depending on area), wolf (Aug.-April), grouse (Aug.-May), ptarmigan (Aug.-May).

Aug. 25: Golden North Salmon Derby's final day, hours 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Sponsored by Territorial Sportsmen. Details: juneauempire.com/salmonderby/.

Aug. 28: Golden North Salmon Derby official winners list printed in the Juneau Empire and posted at the First National Bank of Anchorage on Front Street and at the Fred Meyer bulletin board.

Aug. 29: Golden North Salmon Derby Awards Program, 7 p.m., Centennial Hall. Prize winners or designated representatives must attend to claim their prize.

Aug. 31: Towering Totem poles, children's program, 11 a.m. Saturday, Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center covered viewing area. Details: 789-6640.

Sept. 3: Juneau Alpine Club monthly meeting, 7 p.m., 1136 Slim Williams Way near Skaters Cabin. Details: 789-7058.

Sept. 7: Juneau Alpine Club Paddle to Boy Scout Beach, 10 a.m. Meet at Amalga Harbor. Bring kayak, lunch and safety gear. Suitable for families. Details: Steve Kocsis, 790-3175.

Ongoing: New Eagle Beach State Recreation Area, mile 29 Glacier Highway, now open 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. $5 fee to park in area, free parking along the road.

Ongoing: Guided nature hike on the Trail of Time, Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, 2 p.m. daily. Meet at the flagpoles. Details: 789-6640.

Ongoing: Trap shooting at the Juneau Gun Club, on Montana Creek Road, 5:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays. Details: 789-9844.
