Posted: Wednesday, August 25, 2004

The Grateful Dogs of Juneau will host an American Kennel Club Responsible Dog Ownership Day from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Nugget Mall.

Several organizations will be on hand to provide education and fun for the public. Capital Kennel Club of Juneau will show agility and obedience demonstrations. Grateful Dogs will talk about responsible dog ownership, and the local Red Cross will offer pet first aid tips.

Cheri Lang of Petersburg and her German shepherd, Amigo, will be featured. They work for the law enforcement arm of the U.S. Forest Service. Amigo conducts patrol work, officer protection, detains suspects, and searches for suspects and drugs. They will do demonstrations and offer freebies.

Hands-on arts and crafts, face painting, coloring and dog safety for kids will be available along with door prizes and samples.

The National AKC's annual Responsible Dog Ownership Day is Sept. 17.
