Longtime Sitka resident Frances Jean "Jill" Jorgensen (Lunas) died Aug. 17, 2009, in Coos Bay, Ore., due to complications resulting from a car accident. She was 70.
Born May 23, 1939, she grew up in Virginia, North Carolina and Washington. She attended undergraduate studies at Duke University, where she met and married long time Sitka doctor J. Paul Lunas. She lived in Sitka between 1963 and 1984, and was well loved in the community, her family said. She was a founding member of the Sitka co-op and founder of the Wild Strawberry Restaurant.
After leaving Sitka, she moved to Moscow, Idaho, and attended the University of Idaho, earning her bachelor's degree in architecture in 2004.
"She spent her entire life helping others," her family wrote. "She loved everyone she met and brought joy to the world around her. Her family and friends loved her very much and will miss her terribly."
She is survived by her four children, Bill Jorgensen, of Woodinville, Wash., Terry Meerdink, of Federal Way, Wash., Kirsti McElligott, of Beaverton, Ore., and Fritz Lunas, of Lebanon, Ill.; 10 grandchildren: Kai Traeger, Sven Lunas, Sandy Lunas, Matthew Meerdink, Ryan Lunas, Laura Meerdink, Allie Cleveland, Alice McElligott, Aaron McElligott and Haley Meerdink; and five siblings: David Jorgensen, Philip Jorgensen, Jeff Jorgensen, Allie Murphy and Kris Taylor.
