In response to candidate Alan Austerman's statement in your Aug. 23 article that labeled me "an extreme environmentalist," I would like to take issue with his characterization. I have worked for thousands of hours over the last 12 years as a volunteer advocating for clean water in Alaska. My work includes ensuring Alaska's fish habitats remain productive, protecting our essential subsistent foods, advocating for stringent state water quality standards, and working to protect Alaskans from cancer by preventing the unnecessary release of cancer-causing toxins into our air, water and fish.
It is my opinion that clean water and healthy fish stocks are the very backbone of our coastal economy. Clean water is essential to the health and well-being of all Alaskans. I am proud of my work and stand by my record. I hope Alan will someday join me in helping to protect and enhance these resources and the traditions that sustain us.
